About Us: The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County
The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, Inc. is this area’s primary hunger-relief organization. We provide food to over 100 non-profit agencies and programs that serve low income people in our six town service area through bags of groceries and congregate meals. These include soup kitchens, pantries, child care programs, homeless shelters, senior centers, domestic violence safe houses, and rehabilitation programs.
During 2007, we supplied 1,027,096 pounds of food to 107,228 individuals (unduplicated within each agency) at a savings to our partner agencies of $1.48 million.
History: The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, Inc. originated in 1984 as an agency of the Council of Churches and Synagogues. In January 2003, The Food Bank became an independent entity with its own board of directors.
Mission: The Food Bank’s mission is to provide nutritious food to non-profit organizations that feed the hungry in Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, and Wilton while seeking to raise awareness and promote action to combat hunger in those communities.
Target Population: We provide food for low-income residents of the six town area we serve through over 100 partner agencies and programs.
Program: The Food Bank is this area’s primary hunger-relief organization. We provide food to any qualified non-profit agency in a six town area of Fairfield County (Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford and Wilton) that serves low income people through congregate meals or bags of groceries--soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, child care centers, after school programs, senior centers and rehabilitation programs.
We solicit, collect, sort, warehouse and distribute donated food from such sources as national manufacturers, Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest), federal and state programs, Connecticut Food Bank, local merchants, state and local food drives and individuals. We store the food in our warehouse on Glenbrook Road in Stamford and distribute it to our partner agencies that feed the hungry in our communities. Partner agencies “shop” at The Food Bank warehouse on Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. They pay a shared handling fee of 18 cents a pound. In addition, The Food Bank purchases rarely donated meat and poultry in bulk at very low cost for redistribution to member agencies. The Food Bank is the only service of its kind in the area.
The Food Bank’s partner agencies include CTE, Stamford; George Washington Carver Center, Norwalk; Jewish Family Services, Stamford; Person To Person, Darien; Domus Foundation, Stamford; Christian Community Action, Norwalk; St. Luke’s housing, Stamford; Faith Tabernacle pantry, Stamford; Neighbor to Neighbor, Greenwich; and Wilson Memorial Church pantry, Stamford, to mention just a few.
